What is Information Literacy?

In a nutshell, Information Literacy is the set of skills needed to

  • access,
  • evaluate and
  • use information

Collaboration

To be successfully implemented on campus, information literacy depends on collaboration between

  • classroom faculty,
  • academic administrators,
  • librarians and other information professionals.

In order to effectively implement a program all parties must be actively involved.

Types of Instruction

The library faculty conducts information literacy sessions (library instruction sessions) in LI 118, LI 107 and even in your classroom. These sessions can be customized for student and faculty needs:

  • General Instruction Session - covers introductory information about the library including borrowing policies, virtual tour, copy room, photo ID, reserves, etc. including Ref Desk FAQs (network logins and student email accounts, etc.)
  • Assignment Specific Instruction Session - This is the most common (and preferred) type of instruction sessions. The librarian will prepare a customized instruction session based on your research assignment requirements.
  • Workshops - Librarians offer workshops on a variety of topics in LI 107. Faculty are encouraged to offer extra credit for attending. We will provide a list of participants.
  • Consultations - Librarians provide one on one research consulations with students who may need help with research.

Research Guides

  • Collaborate with a librarian to create a research guide for an assignment, project or course if one doesn't exist already.
  • Use our citation guides to provide resources to students.
  • Communicate with library faculty before assigning a research project.

Canvas

Collaborate in Canvas

  • Add a link to a specific research guide to your Canvas course
  • Use Canvas Conference tool for student research appointments with a librarian
  • Provide librarian led discussions in Canvas related to a research assignment/project
