United Nations Graphic Timeline of Conflict

Late 19th Century - Early Zionism:

  • 1897: The First Zionist Congress convened by Theodor Herzl in Basel, Switzerland, advocating for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

British Mandate Period:

  • 1917: The Balfour Declaration issued by the British government, supporting the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine.
  • 1920-1947: British Mandate of Palestine. Period marked by growing Jewish immigration and increasing conflict.

Formation of Israel and Early Conflicts:

  • 1947: The UN proposes the partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states. The plan is accepted by Jewish leaders but rejected by Arab leaders.
  • 1948: Declaration of the State of Israel, followed by the Arab-Israeli War. Massive displacement of Palestinians in what is known as the Nakba.
  • 1956, 1967, 1973: Successive wars (Suez Crisis, Six-Day War, Yom Kippur War) leading to significant territorial changes and escalating the conflict.

Major Peace Efforts and Intifadas:

  • 1978: Camp David Accords, leading to the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty in 1979.
  • 1987-1993: First Intifada, a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation.
  • 1993: Oslo Accords signed, aiming to achieve a peace treaty based on UN Resolutions 242 and 338.
  • 2000-2005: Second Intifada following the collapse of peace talks.

Recent Developments:

  • 2005: Israel's unilateral disengagement from Gaza.
  • 2006-2023: Ongoing conflict with intermittent periods of escalated violence, including Gaza wars (e.g., 2008-09, 2014) and shifting geopolitical dynamics in the region.
  • 2020: Abraham Accords, normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab countries.
  • 2023: October 7th, 2023. Hamas launched an attack on Israel. This attack  marked the beginning of the 2023 Israel-Hamas war.
