Information for students in RNRS 190/191 and other nursing courses regarding research resources for evidence-based practice.

What is it?

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)

Patient care backed up by research. It is an approach of practicing medicine with the goal to improve and evaluate patient care, and it requires the judicious integration of best research evidence with the patient's values to make decisions about medical care (NLM, MESH, 2009).

Evidence in Practice

To be used in practice evidence must be:

  • Fast
  • Easy to access
  • Easy to understand

Most medical professionals say that they consult a colleague if they are uncertain about a course of treatment at the point of care.  But, with the tools that are available it's actually very easy to consult the medical literature.
